Mr. Chen,

I had the pleasure of attending your lecture and buying your book when you visited Indiana University on March 9th.  I read your book over our university$B!G(Bs spring break and wanted to take this opportunity to thank for telling your incredible story.  The stories that you told were so fascinating that I could not put down the book.

Beyond being a great story, I feel that your book offered insight into China that I have never gotten through my education.  I was continuously surprised with hardships the Chinese people faced and the similarities between how both China$B!G(Bs culture and United States$B!G(B culture have transformed through the years.  Background information that helps me understand China better is useful to me because I am trying to find work in China this summer so that I can travel there.  Becoming immersed in China will enable me to learn about the country and its people while gaining a greater understanding of similarities between American and Chinese culture.

As most interesting things do, your book opened up a sea of questions for me.  If you have time, I would like to ask you to answer two of my questions.  First, at the beginning of your book I was enchanted by how much respect everyone showed one another.  It reminded me of the respect I have seen in stories from the United States$B!G(B past but seen much less today.  Unfortunately, I feel that both U.S. and Chinese cultures have changed more to the slogan you mentioned on page 437 $B!H(BWe are looking forward to the money.$B!I(B  As a foreign student, how difficult do you feel that it would be to find people that are as well mannered and kind as those that I learned of through your book?  What about finding business partners who are as respectful and trustworthy as your father$B!G(Bs partners?  My girl friend, Yi Cai, has told me that I would be disadvantaged because I am American, tan skinned, and only 5$B!G(B6$B!G!G(B tall.  Second, if you don$B!G(Bt mind me asking a more personal question, have you learned anything further about Lifen$B!G(Bs daughter Melody?

I am delighted to have had the chance to meet you, even for the short time that I was able to.  I regret that I am unable to meet such great men as your father and grandfather.  Again, thank you for sharing your wonderful story.

I doubt that anyone in the West can even grasp what it must have been like to grow up in that society. One of the best accounts of what it was like during those years is Red Circle: China and Me 1949-2009 by Stephen Songsheng Chen. It is a story of a family branded capitalist exploiters and suffering the ordeal of surviving in the mad world of communist ideology. To understand the China that Richard Nixon “opened up” to the West and the turmoil of the years until Mao’s death, as well as the remarkable embrace of capitalist economic principles that followed, there is probably no better book available today.

The only thing I did not like about Red Circle was that it ended! What an amazing life story woven artfully and so sensitively! Stephen Songsheng Chen's descriptive detail made me feel like I was walking in his shadow in China or wherever he happened to be at the moment. Red Circle is a warm and wonderful tribute to the Chen family; from a frugal grandfather who saved 20 silver coins throughout times of great poverty so he could give them to his son to make a better life in the big city; to Stephen's father, a highly respected professor, patriot, and successful entrepreneur, unjustly scorned during Chairman Mao's Cultural Revolution; to Stephen's own rise and fall and rise again, a master of English and lover of Chinese opera who achieved great acclaim as a performer. Outcast as the son of a Rightist, Stephen served two terms in labor camps until an amazing twist of fate rescued him from herding sheep in a far western province. From there, as Stephen's uncle once told him, the wide highway stretched before him, and, at almost 71, he's still raring to go! For an excellent view of China then and now and of a great family's survival, Red Circle enlightens, amazes, and touches the heart. I wish I could give Red Circle more than five stars!

What a wonderful book -"Red Circle". I read it cover to cover during a recent plane trip. Although I knew some of the history of the Mao years, this story makes this period very real and personal. Red Circle is a testament to the horror and ultimate triumph of the Chen family and millions of other Chinese families. "Red Circle" clearly articulates the evil that can happen when truth and honesty are suspended in support of authoritarian ideology.

There are no words to express how much I enjoyed reading your MASTERPIECE. I couldn’t put the book down.

Your dear mother and father are smiling with pride from the heavens. You honored them forever in print - for ALL to know. Stephen, I now know them through you and know where you got the inspiration, the courage and the perseverance to achieve the great heights you have accomplished and will continue to achieve through David and Leighton and their sons Matthew and Michael.

And my dearest Yuying, what do I say to my SISTER. There is no better wife, daughter and mother than you, my beautiful friend. Did I cry? You bet I did and I cannot get the visions of her love and faithfulness and her undying courage out of my mind. Stephen, we are all so fortunate to have Yuying in our lives. And through it all still, you all have such huge smiles on your faces and continue to strive for more and all with such grace and class.

Stephen, the book is perfect and I am so hoping that it will get the exposure and recognition it truly deserves. I know it will be a best seller and a major motion picture. It is a story that needs to be told. I am so looking forward to reliving the book through you, Yuying and the children.

Stephen, a job so well done. We are so proud and happy for you. It is an incredible story, written by an incredible man.
