While I have longed to tell my family’s story for many years, my most important goal in publishing Red Circle in the People’s Republic of China’s 60th anniversary is to enhance understanding of China around the world and within its borders. It is essential to know China’s history to appreciate where it is today and to create a better future, not only for China, but also for our world.

——Stephen Songsheng Chen

Red Circle: China and Me, 1949-2009 tells the fascinating story of Stephen Chen and his family. It sketches the history of the People’s Republic of China, not merely as a backdrop, but as the driving force of the book’s action. Red Circle chronicles the rise and fall and rise again of an extraordinary family. At the same time, it is only one of countless stories that could be told by many millions of Chinese. It tells of the hope, turmoil, and terror in the first 30 years of the PRC and of the transformation, transition, and achievement in the last 30 years. Red Circle is the first work of its kind to cover the making of modern China.

The 60-year cycle encompassed by Red Circle is the basis of the traditional Chinese calendar, astrology, and cosmology. The cyclical nature of life and a return to one’s roots are fundamental elements in Stephen’s story. The ways in which his life reflects and completes that of his father, the stunning symmetries and recurring cycles of Red Circle make for a remarkable read.

Stephen has seen China from a range of vantage points that few others have experienced. From the palace he grew up in to brutal labor camps to corporate boardrooms, from stark prisons to secret government offices, Stephen has witnessed history. Red Circle is, however, more than the tale of how a family survives or a nation emerges. At its heart, Red Circle is a thrilling testament to the indomitable will and unconquerable spirit of the individual.

Red Destiny (a historical novel by Stephen Songsheng Chen, published in 2011 in the United States) is a chronicle of fascinating true stories based during China’s great transformation beginning in 1948. It tells the “riches”-to-“rags”-to-“riches” again archetypal experiences of father and son as “Red Capitalists” in China’s early years and after it opened its doors to the world. Touching love stories in both bad and good times fuel the gritty drama that inspires readers to make enormous changes in their lives, no matter how difficult the obstacles. Cherishing dreams, breaking dreams, chasing dreams, and fulfilling dreams all substantiate that where there is a dream, there is hope. Where there is hope, there is a way. Red Destiny is a completely engrossing book that grips readers on many emotional levels not only for multi-cultural enjoyment, but also for soul purification.

Red Circle Publishing & Cultural Exchange International

Red Circle Publishing and Cultural Exchange International, LLC is registered in Ohio, USA. Its founder and chairman is Professor Stephen Songsheng Chen (www.stephenschen.com), author of Red Circle, China and Me, 1949-2009, an autobiography that won four best book awards in 2010.

Stephen Chen was 10 years old when, in 1949, the People’s Republic of China was founded. For the next 60 years, he and his family experienced China’s great upheaval, witnessed its suffering and awakening, its despair and hope, and participated in its unprecedented transformation leading to the remarkable progress that has brought China to its powerful place on today’s world stage.

As China developed from a woefully impoverished nation into a superpower, the world’s attention has focused on its economy. Little does the world know China's modern history: 30 years of endless turmoil followed by 30 years of great change, and then the march forward¾socialism with Chinese characteristics. Without question, China still must overcome tremendous social disharmonies and unprecedented challenges that linger from unresolved problems of the past and that stem from its startlingly rapid economic growth without aggressive political reform.

The 60-year cycle is the core of the traditional Chinese calendar and cosmology. The fortunate red color is the main motif that symbolizes hope and happiness. Life, by nature, is cyclical, with each new generation completing the dreams of its predecessors. This is the fundamental truth behind the book, Red Circle, China and Me, 1949-2009, and the company, Red Circle Publishing and Cultural Exchange International.

Red Circle is wholeheartedly devoted to promoting, producing and publishing books, films, TV series and cultural exchanges with intrinsic ties that bind China and America¾not to dwell on past misfortunes or to glory in the present successes, but to better understand China, America and the world and to help realize the promise of a better tomorrow. We wish sincerely to work with our friends around the world to accomplish these noble and meaningful missions, not only for China and America but also for the whole world.
